After a rainy start and stop Saturday night, the Crown Royal presents the Jim Stewart 400 was postponed to Sunday afternoon with the lap count reset to zero. Series point leader Jeff Gordon led the field to the green flag at 1:12 PM Eastern on a windy and chilly day in Richmond.
Robbie Reiser and the No. 17 Ford Fusion crew were faced with a challenge on Sunday, but they certainly rose to the occasion. The Car of Tomorrow proved frustrating for Matt Kenseth from the start - Kenseth commented that it was “tight in the center, loose off, with no grip coming off the corners.” At lap 41, with his ill-handling racecar, Kenseth had only advanced from the 28th to 26th position. After a couple of adjustments from his crew, Kenseth moved from 35th to 24th in a little under 40 laps. He finally cracked the top 20 on lap 145, and by the time the field began its cycle of green-flag pit stops, he had moved into the 13th position.
The No. 17 machine wasn’t able to threaten the top five, but with the help of the “Killer Bees,” Kenseth took to the track in the 10th position with a little under 150 laps remaining. Avoiding several close calls in the final laps due to wrecks directly in front or just behind the No. 17 car, Kenseth successfully held his position until the finish. Jimmie Johnson won, marking his fourth win for 2007. Kenseth’s top-10 finish in Richmond marks his seventh of the year and third in four races with the Car of Tomorrow. The rest of the top-10 were: #5-Busch, #11-Hamlin, #24-Gordon, #2-Busch (highest finishing Dodge), #12-Newman, #29-Harvick, #20-Stewart, #07-Bowyer and #17-Kenseth (highest finishing Ford).
Despite a successful finish, Kenseth expressed his frustrations. “I feel like we’ve got 20th-place cars,” said Kenseth. “We’re just getting good pit stops and calling the race good and not getting in accidents and finishing 10th with them. We’ve got a long way to go with these cars.” |
